The 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Equipped with a dynamic dual personality

The Jeep Grand Cherokee is the most popular Jeep model of all because it’s one of the best-balanced SUVs you can buy. It gives you plenty of room for a family of five and offers your choice of luxury-class interiors. That’s the on-road side of the Jeep Grand Cherokee personality. When you want to go off-road, you can tap into the Jeep family heritage and the rugged capabilities Jeep is known for.

Put those two powerful components together and you have the new 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee. It’s a great reason to take I-90 and I-94 East from Des Plaines IL and visit us at Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram of Chicago. This two-row midsize SUV seamlessly combines rugged aesthetics, a plush interior, and off-road capabilities.

2024 Updates

The 2024 model maintains the design from the 2022 redesign, holding its ground against competitors. While the Grand Cherokee caters to serious off-roaders, it also delivers on-road comfort. It stands at an advantageous intersection of price, capabilities, and luxury, though there are some drawbacks to consider.

Trims in the New Grand Cherokee

The base model of the new Grand Cherokee is the Laredo two-wheel drive version. The Altitude trim is next, while the Limited and the Overland trims follow after that.

Engines and Performance

The standard engine in the 2024 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a V6 that delivers plenty of power and still manages to give you solid fuel economy. For drivers around Oak Park and Evanston IL who want even more power, move up to the available HEMI® V8 engine. That would give you the Grand Cherokee’s highest towing capability. There’s also a plug-in hybrid powertrain consisting of a turbo-four-cylinder engine and two electric motors.

The standard V6 engine in the Grand Cherokee is not particularly thrilling, taking around 8.0 seconds for a 0-60 mph sprint. However, the available 4xe plug-in hybrid offers notably quicker acceleration. The brakes provide confident stopping power, and the steering is light yet accurate. While not the most athletic, the Grand Cherokee excels off-road compared to its midsize SUV counterparts.

Exterior/Interior Highlights

The entry-level Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo gives you popular features like heated side mirrors, roof rails and LED headlights. If you add the Altitude Package to this trim, you’ll get gloss-black accents, rain-sensing windshield wipers and a power liftgate. There’s also an available towing package that will give you a load-leveling rear suspension and a class IV receiver.

The Grand Cherokee boasts ample space, though entry requires a decent step up due to its height. The reclining second row comfortably accommodates passengers up to 6 feet tall. The controls are generally user-friendly, but some dials are small, and certain touch-sensitive controls may be obscured by sunlight. A surround-view camera system is recommended for improved visibility and parking assistance.

Interior technology

The Jeep Grand Cherokee for 2024 comes with an 8.4-inch touch screen, wireless smartphone connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a six-speaker stereo. You can upgrade to a 10.1-inch touch screen, a 10.25-inch passenger-side touch screen, wireless device charging and a rear-seat entertainment system the family will love. You can also move up to a premium Mcintosh stereo with 19 speakers and a panoramic sunroof.

Equipped with Jeep’s latest Uconnect 5 infotainment system, the Grand Cherokee features crisp graphics and a user-friendly interface. The available McIntosh surround-sound system offers rich, distortion-free audio. Smartphone integration, numerous USB ports, and advanced driver aids contribute to a comprehensive tech package.

Off-road Capability

The Jeep Grand Cherokee lives in a competitive class and yet it’s one of the most adept in the category when you’re ready to go off-road. The new Grand Cherokee offers two available four-wheel drive systems. It also gives you off-road choices like the Selec-Terrain system along with air suspension and a two-speed transfer case. Just the fact that the Jeep name is on the front tells you this is an SUV that knows how to leave the beaten path.

The Quadra-Lift Air Suspension system

The editors at Kelley Blue Book don’t toss around complimentary terms lightly, but they called the Grand Cherokee’s Quadra-Lift Air Suspension system “fantastic.” It’s available when you choose the Overland and Summit trims with four-wheel drive. Quadra-Lift lowers the ride height on the highway for better comfort and aerodynamics. Off-road, the ride lifts higher for better off-road performance.

Storage/Fuel Economy

Cargo space behind the second row is average for its class at 37.7 cubic feet. The Grand Cherokee offers above-average towing capability, reaching a maximum of 6,200 pounds. Smaller item storage is generous, with ample cupholders and spacious center console bins.

The Grand Cherokee achieves an EPA-estimated 22 mpg combined, placing it above average for midsize SUVs. Real-world testing confirms the EPA’s figures are achievable.

Value/Comfort

The Grand Cherokee occupies a unique market position, with entry-level models competitively priced but lacking some features. Fully loaded versions may seem luxurious but are priced accordingly. Build quality may not meet expectations for the price. Jeep’s warranty covers three years/36,000 miles of basic and five years/60,000 miles of powertrain and roadside assistance coverage.

Comfort is a standout feature for the Grand Cherokee. The front seats are exceptionally comfortable, complemented by the air suspension that ensures a smooth ride without feeling overly soft. However, road noise on the highway may be more noticeable than desired.

Wildcard

The Grand Cherokee’s imposing exterior design, V8 engine option, and exceptional towing and off-road capabilities contribute to its allure, despite not being a perfect midsize SUV.
